Can I charge several cells in series during the first cycles or do I need to format them?

Ideally they should be formatted individually, because this ensures that they are all cycled to the same voltage limits. On the other hand this is a time consuming process - 30 cells could take about 30 days if only one charger is available. This is not desirable as the first cells are then left much longer before use than the last cells, not to mention the time consuming process. Preliminary experience has revealed that the cells are quite similar in voltage during the first cycle. Given that a battery management system (BMS) is used, which monitors all cell voltages and controls the charging process in accordance to the highest cell voltage, we recommend formatting all of the cells in series. A BMS is strongly recommended anyway!!!
